turn it into politics. and that is what appears to be the case right now in washington, d.c. >> but, sir, politics have a huge influence in this, as we look at the nra which is large lobbying group for gun manufacturers that has supported -- they support you. you have an "a" rating from them. you have voted yes on promoting gun sellers and manufacturers. and yes on the waiting periods taking waiting periods from 72 hours to one day yes on a trigger lock law in washington, d.c. how can you say politics are not involved with this when you look at a voting record right there. the nra gives you an "a" in allowing for people like an adam lanza to have access to the weapons he might have had. his mother might have had it legally, but we cannot police what his mother is doing inside that house to keep lanza away from those weapons. >> yes, and none of the policy issues which you just ticked off would have prevented adam lanza from doing this. and it is very sad that we want to cloud the issue by making nra the policy, as opposed to adam lan za and what triggers this. think of germany, germ

in fort washington. the men shot the homeowner. tony tull live at the scene with more. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. scary situation for a family here around 2:00 this morning. as you mentioned, a home invasion. multiple suspects barged into the house demanded cash and jewelry. the homeowner, a gentleman in his 40s confronted those suspects and he was shot in the back. i want to give you a sense of the scene right now. multiple police units are here on scene doing investigation. you can see that right front window where the blinds are kind of messed up. that is where the situation took place. now, the suspects, we are being told, did get away. but police are still trying to gather clues here. i want to bring in mr. leonard parker. you are the brother-in-law of the victim. >> my wife got a phone call this morning arod about 3:30 saying that my brother-in-law got shot. somebody invaded the home. demanded money, demanded cash. he got shot in the back. >> seems to be a very quiet neighborhood. your sister-in-law as well as your 16-year-old niece was in the house. they're okay o. but does

a criminal background children. we have a piece at the nation.com by our washington reporter which raises the question of whether the nra is really there for gun owners or for manufacturers. it speaks a little to what ben was saying. that they represent and lobby for these gun companies, which are feeling the heat and one hopes that the 2005 law which shielded gun companies from liability regarding gun violence, is looked at very hard. i think the key thing, and joe palafano, the chief domestic policy advisor spoke of in the wake of the tragedies of 1968 the assassination of martin luther king, of bobby kennedy, that johnson and palaphano knew that time is of the essence, and i think that's made even more starkly in light of what we now know about the nra's strategy in the wake of tragedy after tragedy, columbine, virginia, aurora, now. i'm hoping that the political will is strong because the time for meaningful conversation will be with us forever, but the time for political action is now. >> karen, peggy noonan is advocating much the same, actually, in the "wall street journal" saying d

a real cliffhanger. members of the house are now leaving washington, now that a republican plan offered by house speaker john boehner, called plan b, was put aside. it simply did not have enough support to pass. boehner's plan would have raised taxes on those earning more than $1 million a year. after pulling the bill, boehner said it's now up to president obama and the senate to find a way to avoid the cliff. so there's no way to get a plan through the house based on republican support. that is the political lesson from this. but the day before, they said this is going to pass and then yanked it because the support in that chamber was not there. so i don't know quite where it goes from here. no one does. and now it's time for christmas break. so they get back and have less than a week to get something done before january. >> and the president isn't going to hawaii now, right? >> the last i heard, it was still up in the air. you can't imagine he would have a vacation now. or any of them shouldn't have a vacation now. but we don't know. so cliff hanger is the right word for sure. >>> now

gun safety. we have had majorities and two polls, cbs, "the washington post"/abc saying we need stricter laws, stricter earn forcement, and that's -- that's pretty big shift. as you know, opinion had been shifting away toward more people having guns and the whole idea of a way to solve this problem, if everybody has a gun you can stop the shooter. of course that doubles down on the problem and we have a culture in which guns are more available to young people and that approach. >> the president can't do it alone. he needs cooperation of congress. three basic principles should guide our gun policies. first you have to -- must have a license to own a gun. the license should not be easy to get. so how difficult should it be what would be your parameters? >> i think the permit system now is full of holes. it's determined at the state level. we have very uneven laws. as you know, suzanne, you can -- the permit system as a background check, a waiting peer, that's all very helpful. it done get into whether you know how to use a gun. the kinds of things we do to license people to drive.
